A German adaption of the ENRICHD Social Support Inventory: statistical results in patients with heart disease

Abstract. This paper presents an instrument for the assessment of perceived emotional social support in heart disease patients called the ESSI-D (ENRICHD Social Support Inventory – Deutsch), a German adaptation of the English ESSI. Psychometric properties of the ESSI-D were examined using a sample of N = 1,597 patients (22.7% women) undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. Cronbach’s alpha for the total sample was α = .89. A confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the unidimensional structure of this scale. Correlations with different criterion variables, such as partner status, social functioning, physical functioning, and depression, provided evidence for the construct validity of the scale. The ESSI-D is an economic instrument for the assessment of emotional social support with good psychometric properties.
