Abstract

On the basis of a detailed description of the vegetation cover in the subtropical-semiarid high Andes of NW-Argentina the altitudinal distributions of the C3 and C4 plant species have been compared with each other. All plant formations of this part of the Andes show the characteristics of open half-desert vegetation. In the submontainous and montainous belt thorny woodland predominates which is rich in cacti. On the high-montainous Puna plains open dwarf shrub-heathland prevails and the Andean belt following above is covered with sclerophyllous tussock grasses. A lack of photosynthetic active radiation is not likely to limit plant growth anywhere. Of the 631 higher plant species 70 are provided with the typical leaf structure of the C4-"Kranz"-characters. Among the CAM-plant species the cacti are the most important group beside some few terrestrial Bromeliaceae. As has been proven already on other continents, the percentage of C4 plant species diminishes with altitude. In the studied sequence of stages between 2000 and 5000 m above sea-level it amounts to 35 % in the submontainous belt (below 2300 m), 20 % in the montainous belt (2300-3300 m), 15 % in the high-montainous plains (3300-4100 m) and it drops suddenly to 1 % in the subandean belt (4100-4500 m). Of the C4 plants present in the study area more than half belong to the grass family, i.e. 38 species. Among the species of this family the opposite distribution pattern between C3 and C4 plants is very obvious. In the high-montainous stage both groups are equally frequent, above it the annual Muhlenbergia peruviana (P. Beauv.) Steud. is the only C4 grass among C3 tussock grasses. Below it the number of C3 grasses decreases rapidly and beneath 2300 m Stipa plumosa (Trin.) grows in the dry valleys as the only one. It is attempted to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the eco-physiologic peculiarities of the two species groups with regard to the abiotic and biotic ecological factors which change with altitude. The factor that seems most to determine the altitudinal distribution of the C4 plants is the temperature-complex. Their upper limit corresponds more or less with a mean annual temperature of 7 °C and a mean temperature of the hottest month of 9.5 °C, the mean maximum temperature of which amounts to 18 °C and the mean minimum to 5 °C. Since in the altogether semiarid or even subarid area all higher plant species have to have adaptations to long and irregular dry periods, the C4 species do not seem to possess additional advantages to overcome the lack of water supply. On the contray, they only dominate the vegetation cover on sites which have access to groundwater sources. There they are obviously able to use the other natural resources - light and mineral nutrients - with more efficiency. The strong influence on the whole area exercised by herds of domestic animals grazing throughout the year may to some extent have produced a more favourable situation for the C4 species, because they mostly belong to the poorer fodder plants, perhaps because of their lower nitrogen content. We report on the history of the term "Kranz", that was originally used to describe a special arrangement of palisade parenchyma, but in current usage, refers to the special bundle sheath cells of C4 plants. The "Kranz" phenomenon has not sufficiently been illustrated. Therefore, cross sections of leaves of 27 C4 plants from northwest Argentina and of Parthenium hysterophorus are illustrated. P. hysterophorus as well as P. glomeratum look anatomically like a C4 plant, but follows the C3 pathway of assimilation. Anatomical and morphological peculiarities of all of these species are provided.
