ABSTRACT

Nanotechnology is manipulating the size of matter from 1 to 100 nanometers at least in one dimension. Moving from bulk or micro size to nanoscale, the properties of matter drastically change which leads to revolutionary, unique and demanding applications in almost every field of science and technology. So day by day, the impact of nanotechnology on human and industry is increasing. The continuous advances in the field of nanotechnology discovered various methods to synthesize nanoparticles with two different approaches, identified as top-down and bottom-up approach. The synthesized nanoparticles are either organic or inorganic. The organic are micelles, liposomes, dendrimers, hybrid and compact polymeric nanoparticles. Inorganic are fullerenes, quantum dots, silica, metal nanoparticles etc. By using physical, chemical, biological and hybrid techniques of synthesis, different types of carbon, ceramic, metal, semiconductor, polymeric and lipid based nanoparticles are being synthesized. This chapter discusses only physical methods of synthesis of nanoparticles.
