The structure and hypotensive effect of phenyl propanoid glycosides in hassaku and orange peels are described in a series of studies of physiologically active substances in citrus peels. Six phenyl propanoid glycosides were isolated, and their structures were established: coniferin _??_1_??_, syringin _??_2_??_, dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol-4-β-glucoside _??_3_??_, 1-(4-glucosyl-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-{2-me-thoxy-4-_??_1-(E)-propene-3-ol_??_-phenoxy}-propane-1, 3-diol _??_4_??_, 1-(4-glucosyl-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-{2, 6-dimethoxy-4-_??_1-(E)-propene-3-ol_??_-phenoxy}-propane-1, 3-diol _??_5_??_ and 1-(4-glucosyl-3-methoxyphen-yl)-propane-2-ene _??_6_??_ by MS, UV, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and chemical evidence. We propose the terms citrusin A, B and C for these new phenyl propanoid glycosides(_??_4_??_, _??_5_??_and _??_6_??_). Each component was intravenously injected in SHR-SP rats (1mg/100g body weight), and compounds _??_1_??_ and _??_2_??_ were found to raise rat blood pressure, but compounds _??_3_??_, _??_4_??_ and _??_6_??_ lower rat blood pressure.
