ISHS Acta Horticulturae 9: Symposium Plastics on Crops, Crops under Plastics

THE INFLUENCE OF PLASTIC COVERING OF ASPARAGUS RIDGES ON SOIL TEMPERATURE AND YIELD

Authors:   Dr. F.W. Frenz, R. Munz
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1968.9.23
Abstract:
For some time growers have been studying the possibilities of an earlier asparagus harvest. In 1966 Franken gave a detailed report on the influence of soil heating. For general use, however, the cost of this method is too high. A plastic covering of the ridges also proposed by Franken seems to be much more favorable. In Western Germany the first studies on this subject were made by Munz (1965). Both authors showed that using a covering of this kind the harvest of asparagus will begin earlier and the total yield will be increased. In the work reported we wanted to show by how much covering will influence the soil temperatures as an essential requirement for the growth of asparagus and during which period this covering will affect the yield and the course thereof in an optimal way.
