TISSUE CULTURE TECHNIQUES USED IN SPAIN TO RECOVER VIRUS-FREE CITRUS PLANTS |

| Abstract:
Citrus virus diseases are widely distributed in Spain and they cause very important economic losses to our citrus industry. A Citrus Variety Improvement Program has been established to solve this problem. The main objective of the Program is obtaining 'virus-free' citrus plants of all the varieties commercially grown in Spain. The techniques used for this purpose are shoottip grafting in vitro, nucellus culture in vitro and ovule culture in vitro. After this Program Spain will be the first country where most of the citrus plants commercially propagated will have been originated from tissue culture in vitro. In this paper the three in vitro techniques are reviewed and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. | |
