PEACH LATENT MOSAIC AND ITS RELATION TO PEACH MOSAIC AND PEACH YELLOW MOSAIC VIRUS DISEASES

Author:   J.C. DESVIGNES
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1986.193.6
Abstract:
Peach mosaic (PMV) has been well known in USA for 50 years. Peach yellow mosaic (PYMV) was described in Japan, 1973. Peach latent mosaic (PLMV) has been studied in France for more than 10 years. We will attempt to establish a relation between these three virus diseases. They have many common characteristics :
  • peach as principal host,
  • herbaceous plants are immune,
  • causal agent unpurified and unidentified,
  • comparable symptoms : retarded foliage and maturity, chlorotic mottlings, deformity of the fruits,
  • natural spread by vectors'bites (Eriophyes or Aphis),
  • cross-protection between strains,
  • good repartition in the tree, so high rate of transmission,
  • very short contact period (1 to 2 days),
  • good heat resistance.

The principal differences are symptoms gravity and description of some peach mosaic strains on other Prunus spp. (apricot, almond, plum). Nevertheless it is probably the same universal, frequent, specific peach virus disease.
