Abstract

Education has a crucial part to play in the global response to climate change. The issue reaches to education’s essential role of preparing young people for life and citizenship. Climate change’s challenge to education cannot be met solely at the level of curriculum. Responding to climate change necessitates engendering cultural and behavioral change. To effectively educate students to live more sustainably schools require holistic programs. International environment conferences have helped shape the development of such programs in a number of countries over recent decades. An example of a program designed to galvanize the interest and purpose of a school community is the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI) from Australia. This article examines one secondary school’s early implementation of the AuSSI program and its vision to educate its students with a greater preparedness to inherit the earth.
