Moderate kinesio taping stretch tension produced good inter-day reliability of dorsiflexion joint position sense measurement

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no golden standard for tape stretch tension applicable to kinesio taping technique. The purpose of this study was to examine test-retest reliability of joint position sense when different stretch tensions of kinesio taping applied to the tibialis anterior in healthy adults.
METHODS: Ten collegiate students voluntarily participated the study in two separate occasions within 3-7 days. I-shape of kinesio taping was applied to the tibialis anterior. The kinesio taping were facilitated in non-taping, paper-off, 50%, and 100% of maximal stretch of tape. Active and passive productions of joint reposition during dorsiflexion were assessed. Target angles were set at dorsiflexion 5°, 10°, and 15°. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC2,1) was used to determine test-retest reliability over two testing sessions.
RESULTS: Inter-day position sense error measurement was significant difference in 50% and 100% of KT stretch tensions. A wide range of test-retest reliability during dorsiflexors proprioceptive test was identified (ICC: -0.26 ~ 0.89).
CONCLUSIONS: A high level of reliable constant error measurement was observed during active movement when kinesio taping was applied with 50% of maximal stretch to the tibialis anterior muscle.
