Supporting Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers: Challenges for Child Care Staff

Abstract

Purpose: The child care setting can help preschoolers develop healthy eating habits. Establishing such habits may increase preschoolers’ likelihood of carrying them into adulthood, which can decrease the risk of nutrition-related chronic diseases. Challenges in supporting preschoolers’ healthy eating were investigated among child care staff.
Methods: Three focus group interviews were conducted with 29 child care staff members. Audiotapes of the sessions were transcribed.
Results: Several themes were identified from the analysis of the transcripts. An intrapersonal (individual) factor was children's picky eating. Interpersonal factors (interactions) included perceptions that parents do not encourage their children to eat in a healthy way, and that child care staff's use of practices were inconsistent with health professional recommendations. Physical environment factors included perceptions that healthy food was not accessible at child care centres and that children have unhealthy food at home.
Conclusions: Program planners and health professionals can develop and implement strategies to overcome some of the identified challenges to supporting preschoolers’ healthy eating.

Objectif: Le milieu des garderies peut contribuer à l'acquisition d'habitudes alimentaires saines chez les enfants d’âge préscolaire. L’établissement de telles habitudes peut augmenter la possibilité pour ces enfants de les conserver à l’âge adulte et ainsi de diminuer leur risque de souffrir de maladies chroniques liées à la nutrition. Les difficultés qu'affronte le personnel de garderie dans le soutien d'une alimentation saine chez les enfants ont été étudiées.
Méthodes: Trois entretiens avec des groupes de discussion ont été menés avec 29 membres du personnel de garderies. Les enregistrements des séances ont été transcris.
Résultats: L'analyse des transcriptions a fait ressortir plusieurs thèmes. L'un des facteurs intrapersonnels (individuels) était le grignotage chez les enfants. Parmi les facteurs interpersonnels (interactions), mentionnons les perceptions que les parents n'encouragent pas leurs enfants à manger sainement et que les pratiques du personnel de garderie ne sont pas conformes aux recommandations des professionnels de la santé. Les facteurs relatifs à l'environnement physique portaient sur les perceptions que les aliments sains ne sont pas accessibles aux garderies et que les enfants n'ont pas une alimentation saine à la maison.
Conclusions: Les planificateurs de programmes et les professionnels de la santé peuvent concevoir et mettre en vigueur des stratégies pour surmonter certains des défis décelés dans le soutien d'une alimentation saine chez les enfants d’âge préscolaire.
