ABSTRACT

MAXQDA is a software package for the analysis of qualitative and mixed data, which since its beginnings at the end of the 1980s has focused on the support of mixed methods research. Indeed, the very first version in 1989 was intended to assist the management of quantitative data in parallel to verbal data. At that time, when the use of multimedia data for social science analysis was still a long way off, the use of quantitative data in qualitative research was primarily designed for the management of profile data such as gender, age, education, or household income. In addition, support for surveys with both standardized and open-ended questions played an important role right from the start. The spectrum of importable data ranges from simple documents such as qualitative interviews to focus group transcripts with multiple speakers to survey data (with open-ended and closed-ended data), websites, data from social media and reference managers.
